Reusable Totes vs. Cardboard Boxes: The Real Cost of a Tulsa Move
We ran the numbers on a typical 2-bedroom Tulsa move. Reusable totes win on cost, time, and back pain.
The scenario
2-bedroom apartment moving from Midtown Tulsa to Broken Arrow. About 30 boxes worth of stuff. One weekend to pack, one Saturday to move.
Cardboard: what it actually costs
- 30 medium boxes at Home Depot: ~$90
- Packing tape (3 rolls): $15
- Box cutter, markers, labels: $10
- Gas for the second trip to buy more boxes when you underestimated: $8
- Time to assemble 30 boxes: ~90 minutes
- Time to break down and recycle after the move: ~60 minutes
- Boxes that arrive damp, crushed, or reused with someone else's tape residue: 3–5
Cash out: ~$125. Time out: ~2.5 hours of setup / teardown. Result: a pile of cardboard on your curb hoping the recycling truck takes it.

The parts that do not show up on a receipt
- Totes stack square. Cardboard bulges. You fit more into a truck load with totes.
- Totes have handles that do not tear off with a bag of books inside.
- Totes are watertight. If a Tulsa thunderstorm rolls in on move day, your books survive.
- One reusable tote replaces ~400 cardboard boxes over its lifetime. That is the environmental case, but the personal case is: you did not create waste to move.
When cardboard still wins
Long-distance moves where you will not see the boxes again for weeks. Storage that runs beyond our rental window. Everything else, totes are the better tool.
